Play is How Children Grow!
At GROW Paediatrics, play isn’t an “extra”—it’s the heart of how young children learn, connect and make sense of the world. Play builds the foundations for communication, emotional regulation, social skills, problem-solving, motor development and confidence.
Because play is so central to development, it’s woven through everything we do at GROW. Our team uses playful, child-led therapy approaches that support growth while honouring your child’s unique interests, strengths and ways of engaging.
Depending on your child’s needs, support may come from:
Occupational Therapists (OTs)
Our OTs help children develop the sensory, motor and social-emotional foundations they need for play. They support:
- Sensory exploration
- Motor skills needed for active play
- Emotional regulation
- Pretend play
- Flexible play ideas
- Transitions between play activities
OTs help make play feel fun, achievable and meaningful.
Speech Pathologists
Play is how communication grows. SPs support children with:
- Early play skills (turn-taking, shared attention)
- Language development through play
- Social communication
- Symbolic and pretend play
- Play-based interaction between peers, siblings and caregivers
Psychologists & Counsellors
Our psychology team supports the emotional and social side of play—confidence, flexibility, frustration tolerance, big feelings and relationship building. They help children who avoid play, feel overwhelmed by social situations or find imaginative play challenging.
Registered Nurses (RNs)
Our RNs support children whose play development is influenced by medical or developmental factors. They help families understand how health, feeding, sleep or regulation may affect engagement in play.
Together, this multidisciplinary team ensures your child experiences safe, supported, joyful play that fosters real developmental progress.
What does our Play Team do?
Play skills are not “just fun”—they are developmental milestones. Our team helps infants, toddlers and young children build:
- Shared attention and early social skills
- Sensory exploration and confidence interacting with the world
- Turn-taking, imitation and back-and-forth play
- Pretend and imaginative play
- Problem-solving and flexible thinking
- Emotional regulation during play
- Confidence interacting with peers
- Functional play and early learning through play
For many children, play can be challenging; particularly those who are neurodivergent, sensory-sensitive, delayed in communication, or who have medical or developmental needs. We support children to play in ways that feel safe, successful and enjoyable.
Our Approach
At GROW Paediatrics, our play support is:
Child-led
We follow your child’s interests, sensory needs and developmental stage—helping them feel safe, seen and motivated.
Neurodiversity-affirming
We honour the unique ways children communicate, explore and interact. We build skills through strengths, not by suppressing differences.
Developmentally informed
Every strategy draws on early childhood development, occupational therapy, speech and psychology knowledge.
Relationship-based
Play is a shared experience. We support parents and carers to join in, connect and enjoy their child’s play.
Evidence-based
We use therapeutic models grounded in research—including play-based communication therapy, sensory integration principles and early intervention best practice.
Many families come to us because play feels confusing or overwhelming—we offer clarity, step-by-step guidance and joyful connection.
