What does an Art Therapist do?

Art therapists help children express their thoughts, feelings and experiences through creative, hands-on activities—supporting emotional growth, confidence and wellbeing in a gentle, non-verbal way.

At GROW Paediatrics, our art therapy team supports children from birth to 8 years by:

  • Using art, play and creativity to explore emotions safely
  • Supporting emotional regulation and coping skills
  • Building confidence, resilience and a strong sense of self
  • Encouraging imagination, problem-solving and social–emotional development
  • Creating a calming, sensory-friendly space for expression and connection

Everything we do is tailored to your child’s individual needs so they can express themselves, process experiences and thrive in a way that feels natural and empowering.

Our Approach

Our art therapists work closely with families to create individualised, strengths-based sessions that help children communicate and explore their inner world—especially when words feel too big or too hard.

Using a combination of art materials, play, storytelling and sensory experiences, we gently guide children to:

  • Understand and express their emotions
  • Build strategies for coping and calming
  • Strengthen relationships and connection
  • Feel confident in their creativity and identity

Art therapy sessions are always child-led, trauma-informed and developmentally appropriate, making them a safe and meaningful way for children to process challenges and celebrate strengths.

Who we help

Children who are

  • Experiencing big feelings or emotional overwhelm
  • Neurodivergent and benefit from expressive, sensory-based approaches
  • Finding it hard to communicate their thoughts or feelings verbally

Children with

  • Anxiety, worry or stress
  • Behavioural or regulation challenges
  • Developmental delays affecting emotional or social development
  • Trauma histories, grief or challenging life transitions

What to expect

When you work with our art therapists, you can expect a warm, calming and child-centred environment where creativity becomes a safe pathway to healing and growth.

We begin by getting to know your child—their interests, sensory needs, emotional world and what helps them feel safe—so each session feels inviting and purposeful.

Art therapy sessions may include:

  • Drawing, painting, clay or collage
  • Sensory and calming art activities
  • Story-based or imaginative play
  • Creative expression to support emotional understanding
  • Joint parent–child activities to strengthen connection

We keep you involved throughout, offering insight into your child’s progress and practical strategies you can use at home. Our goal is to help your child feel seen, understood and supported as they grow emotionally, creatively and confidently.
